While there is a common belief among researchers that the situation in which a contingent
valuation (CV) survey is conducted affects the survey’s results, little attention, apart from
interviewer bias, has been paid to how the surveyor’s behavior affects willingness-to-pay
(WTP) stated by respondents. We examine the hypotheses that a sincere attitude on the part of
the surveyor increases the time spent by respondents to answer questions, as well as increasing
WTP values, while decreasing yea-saying. We find that the sincere behavior of the surveyor
does matter when conducting appropriate CV surveys.
