We herein report a method to fabricate mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of two different alkanethiols with a continuous
composition gradient utilizing exchange reaction between an initially-formed monolayer and thiol molecules in solution. In this work, mixed
SAMs of n-hexanethiol [CH3 –(CH2 )5 –SH]: C6 and triethylene glycol mono-11-mercaptoundecyl ether [OH–(CH2 –CH2 –O)3 –(CH2 )11 –SH]:
OEG were prepared. The partial coverage of the OEG molecules and surface wettability depending on the position of the substrate were
characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and water contact angle, respectively. We also investigated protein adsorption onto the
substrate, and discuss a correlation between the adsorbed amounts and the above surface properties.
