Exploring Spatial Schema of Folk House in Izena Village through the Narratives of the residents (A Study of Characteristics of Dwelling Spaces focusing on Ichiban-za, Niban-za, and Amahaji.)
This paper aims to discuss the characteristics of spaces and folk life lived in traditional folk house in Izena village, Okinawa, Japan.And to extract spatial schema of Folk House. The study focuses on the spaces called “Ichiban-za”, ”Niban-za”, and ”Amahaji”, which are important components and plays essential role in their ordinary life of traditional Okinawa-Izena Folk Houses. Through the interviews to the residents, the authors collected 12 examples of narratives about their lives and houses.Through the analysis, the texts are divided into two categories of sentences such as 1) to show the composition of architectural spaces and elements of the house,and 2) to show the act and behavior of the residents.The authors found the characteristics of the space such as “homogeneity and heterogeneity of Ichiban-za and Niban-za”, “expansion of area as territory of Ichiban-za: a schema of a concéntric circle”,“continuity of territory of Niban-za out to the front yard of the house”, and “change of characteristics of borders of the house” .
